Welcome to the Virginia Orchid Society
We’re glad you’re here.
The Virginia Orchid Society (VOS) is a community of orchid enthusiasts brought together by a shared interest in growing, learning, and enjoying these remarkable plants. Whether you’re just getting started or have years of experience, you’ll find opportunities to learn, connect, and participate.
A Brief History
The Virginia Orchid Society began in the early 1950s as a small group of growers meeting informally. It became officially recognized in 1952 and has grown into an established organization focused on orchid education and community engagement.
While meetings are now more structured, the VOS still maintains a welcoming, member-driven atmosphere.
Meetings & What to Expect
The VOS meets monthly from September through May, typically on the third Sunday. Meetings are held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and are also available via Zoom, though in-person attendance is encouraged.
A typical meeting includes:
- Welcome remarks and VOS updates
- A guest speaker (local or national orchid expert)
- A break for socializing and refreshments
- A show table review featuring orchids grown by members
Meetings begin at 2:00 PM and usually conclude around 4:30 PM, with time before and after to connect and explore the display of blooming orchids.
Our Show Table
One of the highlights of each meeting is the show table, where members bring in blooming orchids to share.
- Open to all skill levels
- Reviewed by experienced growers
- Includes discussion of care techniques and growing conditions
It’s a simple, hands-on way to learn by seeing what others are growing and how they’re doing it.
Programs, Events & Community
In addition to regular meetings, the VOS offers:
- Monthly speakers on a wide range of orchid topics
- A Holiday Meeting with food and Orchid Bingo
- Occasional summer activities such as picnics or nursery visits

Members can also stay connected through:
- Our website: www.vaorchidsociety.org

Annual Orchid Show
A key event each year is the VOS’ annual orchid show, where members and invited exhibitors display orchids for the public.
- Judged under American Orchid Society (AOS) standards
- Includes ribbon judging and AOS awards
- Features vendors, educational displays, and guest exhibits
Members are encouraged to participate or volunteer as part of the event.
Getting Started with Orchids
If you’re new to orchids, here are a few simple tips:
- Understand the light and temperature conditions you can provide
- Choose orchids suited to that environment
- Buy healthy plants from reputable growers
- Observe your plants regularly and adjust care as needed
- Be patient—orchids take time to adapt
Most importantly, ask questions. Members are always willing to share their knowledge and help you succeed.
Learn, Connect, Grow
The Virginia Orchid Society is built on shared knowledge and enthusiasm. Attend meetings, bring your plants, and take advantage of the many resources available to you.
We look forward to growing with you.
